Wide leg jeans are one of AMO’s signature fits. The cut is fitted through the waist and hip, then releases from the thigh into a full, straight-falling leg that skims rather than clings. Done well, it is the most forgiving silhouette in denim and, for many, the most flattering, because the volume below the hip lengthens the whole line.
The Frida is where that fit lives. It has been in the collection through twenty washes and remains the pair our customers keep coming back for, cut high with a full inseam and a leg that holds its shape through the day. The Regina, Kira and Margot Trouser take the same idea in different directions, from an easy relaxed line to a cleaner, more tailored fit, and lower to mid rise.
Baggy Wide Leg Jeans
Baggy and wide leg get used interchangeably, and they are not quite the same thing. A classic wide leg is fitted through the seat and hip before it opens. A baggy wide leg carries extra room everywhere: more space through the seat and thigh, a softer rise, and a deliberately oversized line from waist to hem.
The difference shows in how the jean moves. A wide leg falls. A baggy wide leg drapes and shifts as you walk, which is where the 90s reference comes from. The Kira sits at the end of the collection, roomy through the leg with enough structure that the fabric still hangs cleanly instead of collapsing.
If you want volume and still want to keep your waistline, size to your true waist and let the leg do the rest.
High Rise Wide Leg Jeans
Rise is what makes a wide leg work. A high rise sits at or just above the natural waist, which marks the narrowest point of your torso and gives the leg volume something to balance against. Drop the rise and the same leg reads heavier. Raise it and the whole silhouette lifts.
Every Frida in this collection is a high rise, and so is the Frida Crop. That is deliberate. The high waist is what lets the leg be as full as it is without overwhelming the frame, and it is why a wide leg photographs longer than its inseam suggests.
If a high rise sits uncomfortably on a shorter torso, the mid rise cut of the mid rise jeans collection gives the same leg with a waistband that sits an inch or so lower. The high rise jeans collection carries the full high-waisted range across every fit.
Wide Leg Trouser Jeans and Cropped Wide Legs
Two variations on the same silhouette, both worth knowing.
Trouser jeans bring the refined details of tailoring to denim. Clean fronts, smooth waistbands, minimal hardware, and relaxed legs create a polished silhouette while retaining the ease and character of denim. The Donna Trouser and Margot Trouser are designed with these trouser-inspired details, making them an elevated alternative to traditional jeans that can move easily between casual and more polished dressing.
Cropped wide legs stop the leg above the ankle. The Frida Crop keeps the full width and takes length out of the hem, which changes the proportion entirely and puts the focus on your shoes. If a full-length wide leg feels like too much fabric, a crop is usually the answer. The full range lives in cropped jeans, including several cropped wide leg jeans.
Fabric, Fit and Length
Wide leg denim takes on the character of the fabric it is made from. Our rigid denim is soft and comfortable from the first wear, with a natural ability to relax and grow with wear, molding to your shape over time. Comfort-stretch denim offers ease from the start, moving with the body while maintaining a softer, fluid drape through the leg. Both bring a distinct feel to the collection - the choice comes down to how you want your denim to wear, move, and evolve over time.
Length is the decision most people get wrong. A full-length wide leg is meant to graze the floor with a slight break over the shoe, which is what carries the line all the way down. Hemming it to the ankle turns a wide leg into a different jean. If you plan to wear flats, hem for flats. If you live in a heel, leave the length. (If you need a shorter length, we recommend choosing a style with a raw hem, which can easily be cut to your desired length.)
The vintage reference is intentional. These styles draw from the iconic denim silhouettes of the ’70s and ’90s, reworked with considered proportions and updated fits designed for the modern body.
How to Style Wide Leg Jeans
Styling a wide leg comes down to balance. Volume below wants something closer above, which is why a cotton tank or a fitted tee tucked at the front is the easiest thing you can put with a wide leg.
For shoes, a full-length pair covers almost anything, so a flat sandal, a loafer or a low boot all work. Cropped wide legs open up the ankle, which is where a mule or a heeled sandal earns its place. In colder months, a tall boot under a full-length leg keeps the line unbroken.
