Where a high-rise waistband sits

Rise is the measurement from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband, and it decides where a jean sits on your body before any other detail matters. A high rise runs about ten inches or more, which puts the waistband at your natural waist, above the navel and at the narrowest point of the torso. High rise and high-waisted describe the same thing, and retailers use one or the other by habit.

What that position buys is stability. A waistband on the hip has nothing holding it there, so it slides down through the day and pulls the crotch seam with it. A waistband at the natural waist sits above your ribcage and below the widest part of your hip, so it stays put. Annette holds that line under a relaxed thigh and a long inseam. Frida holds it under a full wide leg.

What a high rise does to leg length and waist definition

Two things happen when the waistband moves up. The visible break between your torso and your leg moves up with it, so more of the line below the waist belongs to the leg. That is the mechanism behind the claim that a high rise lengthens the leg, and it holds for most bodies, not all.

The second effect is definition. Your natural waist is the narrowest part of the torso, so a waistband placed there follows a curve instead of crossing a straight line. Rigid cotton holds that curve better than a stretch blend, which is why Frida and Cate keep their shape through a day of wear.

None of this shows under an untucked shirt, so a tuck, a crop or a shorter body is what makes the rise visible. The rest of women's jeans gets easier to shop once you know which rise you want.

Who a high rise suits and who it does not

A high rise asks something of your proportions. A long torso gives the waistband room. A short torso leaves less distance between the waistband and the ribcage, and on some frames a 10-inch rise ends up close enough to the bust that the waist disappears rather than appearing.

The second variable is fabric against the stomach. A high rise sits across the soft part of the abdomen, where rigid cotton holds firmly and a softer weave gives. Annette runs relaxed through the hip and thigh. Mira takes the same rise into a cigarette leg with a twisted side seam.

A mid rise sits at or just below the navel and keeps most of the waist definition with less of the coverage. The full case for it is on the mid rise jeans page.

How a high rise behaves with each leg shape

Rise and leg shape are separate decisions that interact. Nine styles sit at this rise and each uses it differently.

Straight is the largest group. Annette runs slouchy through the hip with an inseam long enough to stack at the boot. Loverboy relaxes the same rise and crops above the ankle with a frayed hem and a button fly.

Christie is a barrel jean, which widens through the thigh and curves back toward the ankle for a rounded outline. A high rise keeps a barrel from looking heavy, because the volume starts from a defined waist. Christie Crop is that shape, ending above the ankle.

Mira runs a cigarette leg, narrow and even from knee to hem. Frida and Frida Crop take the rise into a full wide leg, covered in depth on the high rise wide leg jeans page. Cate and the Easy Army Trouser are trouser cuts, one with knee darts and utility pockets, the other with a dropped seat and army patch pockets. For the shapes themselves, how the four leg shapes differ sets them out side by side.

Cropped high rise and where the hem lands

Crop and high rise often turn up together, and there is a reason for it. Both decisions move a horizontal line on the body, one at the waist and one at the ankle, and doing both puts the shortest possible run of fabric between them. The proportion is deliberate.

Where the hem lands matters more on a crop than anywhere else. Christie Crop and Frida Crop both end above the ankle bone, which keeps the narrowest part of the leg visible and stops a wide leg from swallowing the foot. Loverboy ends in the same place with a frayed edge. Cate stops slightly higher and pairs more comfortably with a flat shoe than a heel.

More of the range is at cropped jeans.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a high rise jean?

A high rise jean has a rise of roughly ten inches or more, measured from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband, which puts the waistband at your natural waist above the navel. High rise and high waisted mean the same thing and the two terms are used interchangeably.

Mid rise sits at or just below the navel, and low rise sits on the hip. Exact measurements may vary, so check the rise listed on the product page.

Where should a high rise waistband sit on your body?

At your natural waist, which is the narrowest part of your torso, usually an inch or two above your navel and a few inches below your ribcage. If you bend to one side, the crease that forms is your natural waist. That is where the top of the waistband belongs.

If the waistband is sitting on your hip, the rise is too short for you or the jeans are too big. If it is pressing up under your bust, it is too long.

What is the difference between high rise and mid rise jeans?

A high rise sits at your natural waist, above the navel, and usually measures ten inches or more. A mid rise sits at or just below the navel and usually measures eight to ten inches. High-rise covers more of your stomach and stays in place better throughout the day.

Mid rise is the easier of the two to wear with an untucked top, since the waistband does not need to be visible to do its job. High rise gives you more waist definition when you tuck.

Do high rise jeans make your legs look longer?

For most people, yes. The waistband marks where your torso appears to end and your leg appears to begin, so moving it up moves that break up with it, and more of your height below the waist counts as leg. The effect is stronger when you tuck your top in.

A cropped hem adds to it, because a visible ankle keeps the leg line from stopping at a bunched hem. Wide leg styles like Frida get the most from a high rise for this reason.

Are high rise jeans good if you have a short torso?

They can be, though they need trying on. A short torso leaves less room between your natural waist and your ribcage, so a ten inch rise can end up sitting close to your bust, which shortens the space it was meant to define. Some short torso frames wear a high rise well.

If a high rise feels crowded on you, a mid rise usually gives you the same waist definition with more room to breathe. It is worth ordering one of each in the same style.

Which AMO styles are high rise?

Annette and Loverboy are high-rise straight legs, Christie and Christie Crop are barrels, Mira is a cigarette leg, Frida and Frida Crop are wide legs, and Cate and the Easy Army Trouser are trouser cuts. Frida and Easy Army Trouser come in multiple washes.

Cropped styles include: Christie Crop, Frida Crop, Cate and Loverboy. Prices run from $290 to $328.

What is a barrel jean, and does AMO make one in a high rise?

A barrel jean widens through the thigh and curves back in toward the ankle, so the leg has a rounded outline rather than a straight or a flared one. AMO makes two, both high-rise: Christie at full length and Christie Crop ending above the ankle.

The high rise is what keeps the shape balanced, since the volume in the leg sits under a defined waist. A barrel works best with a shoe that has some weight to it.

Do high rise jeans fold or roll at the waist when you sit down?

A well-fitted high rise should not. If the waistband folds when you sit, the rise is usually longer than your torso, so the extra length has nowhere to go. If the whole waistband rolls outward at the top, the jean is a size too small through the hip.

Some fold at the front is normal in a rigid cotton for the first few wears, before the fabric molds to you. If it is still happening after a month, the rise is wrong for your torso.
