What Light Wash Means
Every pair here starts as indigo. Light wash describes how far that indigo has been brought back down, through washing, stone and enzyme treatment, and hand sanding at the points a jean wears anyway: the seat, the front of the thigh, the knee, the hem. On the standard scale of dark, medium and light, light sits at the pale end while still looking like blue denim.
The range within light wash denim is wider than most shoppers expect. The Billie in Adulation is a soft mid-blue, with contrast still visible along the seams. The Frida in Mystical is paler and flatter, closer to the character of a worn-in vintage pair. The Regina in Loom is lighter still, a near-bleached blue with a soft, faded finish. How the Fade Is Made, and How It Wears In
Fade is part of the design. It starts at the mill, where the denim gets its first wash, and continues with wear, becoming lighter, softer and more personal over time.
Rigid cotton holds indigo unevenly, which is why it fades in a pattern rather than all over. The wear points lift first, so the hip, the back of the knee and the hem go pale while the rest holds. The Regina in Loom is cut from 100% cotton, lightweight and rigid, and it is built to soften with every wear. The Billie starts further along that process, cut from premium rigid denim with distressing already worked into the fabric. Comfort-stretch blends behave differently. They hold color more evenly and change less over a year, which is worth knowing if you want a light wash denim jean to stay exactly where it started.
If you want to slow the lift, wash cold, turn the jeans inside out, and wash them less often than feels natural.
Light Wash by Leg Shape
Straight legs carry a pale wash cleanly, because there is no extra volume competing with the color. The Annette is a high rise straight with a subtly slouchy line and a long inseam meant for stacking at the ankle. Choosing Between Light, Medium and White
Light wash is the most casual of the blues. It can suit a lighter fabric weight and has a softer, more faded quality, but its versatility extends well beyond warm weather.
A medium wash jeans pair is the year-round middle and the easiest to dress up or down. Dark-wash denim is the most formal end of the range and the closest denim gets to trousers. White jeans work by different rules altogether, since they behave more like summer trousers than jeans.

Light Wash Through the Year
A pale wash belongs to warm months by instinct, and it holds through winter as well when the weight around it goes up. Put a light wash jean under a heavy knit or a wool coat and the contrast does the work.
