What soft means in a cotton denim
Softness in denim comes from two things, and both are decided at the mill. The first is hand, which is how the surface feels against your palm and your leg. The yarn sets the hand: longer, finer cotton fibers spun evenly produce a smoother cloth, and a softening finish after weaving relaxes the surface further. The second is weight.
The majority of styles here are 100% cotton. A cotton denim with a soft hand starts comfortable and keeps improving, because the fibers relax and the weave opens slightly with every wear and wash. Annette is a good example: a high rise straight cut with a long inseam, firm in the first week and settled by the second month. Billie behaves the same way in a heavier rigid cloth. Regina puts it most directly in its own description: lightweight and rigid and built to soften with every wear. The rest of the women's jeans collection follows the same principles.
Weight, and why a lighter denim wears easier
After hand, weight is the variable you feel most. Denim is measured in ounces per square yard, and the difference between a heavy cloth and a light one is the difference between a jean that holds a shape around you and one that moves with your leg. Lighter denim bends earlier at the knee, sits closer through the hip, and stays wearable through an afternoon in heat.
Regina is the lightest cloth in the collection, a 78% cotton and 22% lyocell. Lyocell is a cellulose fiber spun from wood pulp, and it brings drape and a cool surface to the cotton it is blended into, which is why a full-length wide leg in it hangs the way it does. Steph Short takes a different route to the same place with 88% cotton and 12% hemp. Frida runs light for its length, too. For the same feel in a paler finish, see the light wash jeans.
Rigid cotton and how it holds its shape
Rigid describes the fabric before you wear it. Rigid denim is woven from cotton alone, with no elastane in the weft, so the cloth has no mechanical recovery built in. Fifteen of the eighteen denim styles on this page are cut that way.
That gives you shape retention all day. A rigid cotton relaxes where your body moves it, at the knee and the seat, and holds its line everywhere else, so the jean keeps the silhouette it was cut with from morning to evening. Billie and Billie Tall are the clearest cases, both cut from premium rigid denim and both intended to mold to their wearer. Christie holds a sculpted barrel line for the same reason, and Libby keeps a clean taper below the knee through a full day. If leg shape is what you are deciding, the four styles differ in ways that set them side by side.
Comfort is mostly a fit question
Room does more for comfort than give does. The two things that decide whether a jean is wearable for twelve hours are how much space it leaves through the hip and thigh, and where the waistband sits against your body. Fabric matters after those two are settled.
The grid covers most of the range. Annette runs high with a subtly slouchy leg and a long inseam. Maria is a loose horseshoe fit, full through the leg with a curved outseam and a cropped ankle. Christie is a high rise barrel. Marcenia Boot goes the other direction, sitting low and slung at the hip with a slouchy bootcut leg. Robbie splits the difference at a mid rise with an easy flare. Where the waistband lands is a decision on its own, and the mid rise jeans collection covers it properly. For the fits with the most room through the leg, see relaxed jeans.
What else is in this collection
Twenty-eight pieces, twenty of them denim. The Mandy Jacket is a slim denim moto with a zip front, and the Denim Ruth Oversized Shirt is the shirting, cut with a shadow chest pocket and a shirt-tail hem. Both are denim and both belong in a grid built around fabric hand.
The remaining eight are knits and wovens chosen on the same soft criterion: the Wren and Romy sweaters, four jersey tees and long sleeves, the Muse Tank in pigment-dyed vintage jersey, and the Ruth Crop Shirt in stonewashed poplin. For the full range, see the tank tops. For the outerwear, look at the denim jackets.
